Common questions

How many HSN digits must I show on a GST invoice?

It depends on aggregate turnover in the previous financial year. Up to ₹5 crore, a 4-digit HSN code is mandatory on B2B tax invoices (optional on B2C). Above ₹5 crore, a 6-digit code is mandatory on all tax invoices. Exports and imports use the full 8-digit tariff item.

What is the difference between HSN and SAC?

HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) classifies goods; SAC (Services Accounting Code) classifies services. SAC codes in GST start with 99.

Is the 8-digit code the same as the customs tariff item?

Yes. GST uses the Customs Tariff's 8-digit tariff items; the first 2 digits are the chapter, the first 4 the heading and the first 6 the sub-heading.
